Rehydrate and Refuel with Milk
Emerging research supports that drinking milk can be an effective way to help the body refuel and recover after exercise. (It is important to note that the current research on milk/chocolate milk and exercise recovery only applies to adult athletes and not children)
White or chocolate milk is an ideal beverage to drink after a workout because every serving contains the nutrition needed to promote effective recovery after exercise. These nutrients include carbohydrates to refuel muscles; protein to reduce muscle breakdown and stimulate growth; and fluid and electrolytes to replenish what is lost in sweat and to rehydrate the body.
Milk: Nature’s Sports Drink
Milk, flavored or plain, provides carbohydrate for energy to help recovery after endurance exercise.
Milk also provides calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B12, niacin and potassium -- it’s also 90% water, which helps replace fluids and rehydrate the body.
Calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus help promote, maintain and build strong bones.
B vitamins help to convert food to energy to fuel working muscles.
Potassium helps with fluid and mineral balance and helps muscles contract.
Chocolate Milk – Beverage of Champions
Chocolate milk contains both carbohydrates and protein that are important for an athlete’s health; carbohydrates in milk fuels muscles after exercise, and protein helps maintain healthy muscles. From bone building to muscle strengthening, the nutrients in chocolate milk provide a variety of positive health benefits.
Chocolate milk provides important nutrients in a convenient great-tasting, relatively inexpensive package. According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid recommendations, Americans of all activity levels should include 3 servings of low-fat or fat-free milk or milk products in their diet every day. Chocolate milk provides another option for meeting these recommendations
The preliminary research on chocolate milk as a recovery beverage is promising. However, additional research needs to be done to help further support chocolate milk specifically as a post-exercise recovery beverage.
